Here are some troubleshooting steps that can be used with network cable unplugged

Powercycle external device (modem, bridge, etc.) if present: - turn off those devices for atleast 30 seconds and see what happens Cool
Is cable connected: - pretty boring question. It doesnt only apply to the one that is connected to your computer though, check also the one that is going to the wall! Exclamation

Is LAC Enabled: - Enable those LAC!
Are NIC LEDs On / Activity: - there are cables that doesnt have LEDs, so dont make hasty decisions!
Reseated Cable: - unplug/replug cable
Switched ends of cable: - from the one in the wall to the one in the computer. The old switcharoo.
Switched NIC to 10/Half: - to get there, go to the properties of your LAC -> click on configure -> Advanced Tab -> look for speed and duplex and changed the 'Value" to 10/half duplex or Autonegotiation
Tried 2nd cable: - go get another cable!

Those are some of the basic troubleshooting steps you could use when you get a network cable unplugged.

As always, please post your other solutions!
